The Nimbus Box
The Nimbus Box is a playful, experimental project designed as a break space for gallery staff in Cambridge. The structure provides a calm retreat from the demands of a busy workday.
Divided into two compartments by a parametric wall inspired by the soft, fluffy forms of clouds, one side serves as a social eating area with a roof window, while the other offers a serene spot to relax and watch clouds drift by.
The Nimbus Box is a thoughtfully designed break space for gallery staff in Cambridge. It offers a serene retreat to relax, recharge, and reconnect with nature during their workday. The concept draws on the simple joy of cloud watching to create a calming, imaginative environment that balances social interaction and private reflection.
At the heart of the design is a parametric wall, inspired by the soft, rounded shapes of clouds to evoke a sense of weightlessness and tranquillity. This feature, meticulously crafted using digital fabrication techniques, serves as a visual centrepiece and enhances the sensory experience, promoting a relaxing atmosphere that helps staff unwind.
The space is divided into two distinct zones:
A social eating area where staff can gather, enjoy meals, and connect with colleagues. A skylight above frames the sky, inviting natural light into the space and fostering a playful, uplifting ambience.
A quiet relaxation area designed for lying down or sitting while gazing at the clouds. This private nook provides a peaceful escape, allowing staff to take a mental break from the fast-paced demands of their day.
Nimbus Box reimagines workplace break spaces as environments that prioritise well-being and creativity. Its cloud-inspired forms, digitally fabricated details, and focus on nature’s calming influence create a unique, engaging retreat that enhances the break-time experience, encouraging rest, connection, and renewed energy for gallery staff.
