Interior Styling & how to embrace style.

Updated: Feb 23, 2023

When we use interior styling to decorate our homes, we add those finishing touches.

Styling adds character & this acts as a visual display of how we interact with our environment. It’s a personal practice that reveals what in life brings us comfort. Interior styling is also another great opportunity to add to your colour story.

We all instinctively arrange & style our homes. Some enjoy house plants and flowers. Others decorate their walls with photo frames or mirrors. This all contributes to the story that we tell within our homes.

Bevillion wants to share our experience with interior styling & help you achieve great style at home.

What is Interior styling?

Interior Styling is about creating a story for the space with selection, placement, & arrangement. It's the layout of furniture & décor in the home or what we select that is in line with our colour palette. Styling is planning how you want everything in the room to communicate with each other, decorating the environment to suit the atmosphere. We can do this in many ways, with paint colours, fabrics (such as rug's, pillows, curtains), furniture, décor, & whatever you feel adds aesthetic value.

Bevillion's hot tip:

Define a colour palette in your space & ensure everything communicates with each other.

How do you want others to interpret the environment?

Much like art, interior styling is about perspective & it's completely subjective to people experiencing the ambience. When we create art, we consider the message we want to convey to others, this is how we want others to interpret or creations. When we do this with Interior Design/Styling we do this in our surroundings. Ask yourself "how do I want other people to feel when they walk into the space?".

Remember that you cannot control how others will interpret the space, but we can think about the story that we want others to interpret.

Using Materials & Textiles to bring our personality.

Using materials & textiles, we contemplate different elements that we can bring to the design & how this compliments the space. Think about the purpose. We can define an area within our homes that becomes the main point of attention, or we can make an area that merges into the environment.

You can use materials & textiles to change the feeling of the area. A colour that is more prominent in your home design will blend in, whereas a colour in your palette that is used less frequently can make things stand out. Materials & textures can be anything from blankets to pillows, even art work, & things that add to the sensory experience.

Think of a sculpture, this can be any colour(s) or material(s) that match the colour palette. The form can represent a message to convey, one that compliments the environment. If you want the space to feel calm then you could make the sculpture seem minimal, or something to steal the attention, you could make it seem busy with form or patterns.

Textiles are one of the most common forms of interior styling, it makes a house feel homely when adding pillows & blankets are out. It makes you want to cuddle up on the sofa, it reminds us of what home is for: to relax. Remember to plan according to your colour palette so you always have that in mind, as this is a part of how we experience our surroundings.

Our sensory experience us something we do naturally. Think about the items you see, how might they be interpreted? What can you physically feel with your hands? What smells are present? How does this communicate with the home? The more we think about what we want others to sense in a space, the better we can translate this message.

Bevillion's hot tip:

Fabrics don't just belong on soft furniture, you can also use fabrics as art pieces. Macramé is a popular form of art, interwoven fabrics used to hang plants or act as art pieces on the walls. Commonly used in bohemian styles.

Selecting décor according to your colour palette.

Carrying that colour palette from your home design into your styling pieces is the best way to continue that story throughout your home. Select colours that complement one another. Or contrast in ways that are pleasing to the eye. Knowing your colour theory or using a colour wheel to select colours that just work together. There is to many colour schemes to select from, Monochromatic is a popular colour palette, as it is uses different shades & tones of the same colour making everything in the space feel connected through colour.

Interior Styling does take a unique point of view, it’s an art form; tastefully applying those finishing touches that seem to just make sense within the space & the bigger picture.

Get inspired! See how other people style & use interior styling in their homes. To get inspired I read interior design magazines to see what other designers are doing.

House Beautiful has some great articles on decorating & styling.

Elle Decor have some great interior eye candy to inspire those who can't get enough of interior design & styling.

Take the time to play around with how things look. When you step back, how do you interpret them? how does each element interact with each other in your eyes. Think about how you can approach each area within the home, divide it & define a purpose by create a personality for each area in a room, even leaving space to create depth is purposeful. Most importantly have fun with Interior Styling!
